Lavina Barbara Roecker was born on Sept. 12, 1910, on a farm near Portsmouth, Iowa to Michael and Josephine Meier Stoltz. She died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006, at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 96 years, three months and 19 days.

Lavina was one of thirteen children. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. She attended school at St. Boniface Catholic School in Westphalia, Iowa.

On August 26, 1930, Lavina was united in marriage to Frank C. Roecker at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. To this union five children were born. Following their wedding, the couple resided on various farms near Defiance and Manilla, Iowa. In 1946, they purchased a farm near Schleswig, Iowa, where they lived until retiring in 1966 when they moved to Schleswig.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She enjoyed playing the organ and dancing. She loved gardening and canning and was an excellent cook. Lavina was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Charter Oak until making her home at the Reed House in Denison in August of 1998. She then became a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank in 1969. Also three sons Norbert, Marvin and Rolland; two grandchildren Doug and Sheri; one great-granddaughter; one step-son Donald; step-son-in-law Harold Schroeder; and one step-great-grandson. Brothers Frank, George and Bernard; sisters Lena, Mathilda, Mary, Rose, Ann, Lenora, Eva, Margaret and Helen.

She is survived by her children Kenneth Roecker of Schleswig; Charla Knapp and her husband, Munn of Plattsmouth, Nebraska; three daughters-in-law, Theda Roecker of Syracuse, Nebraska; Linda Roecker of Story City, Iowa; and Diane Roecker of Des Moines; step-daughters Edna Schroeder of Denison; Norma Rowedder and her husband, Ivan of Schleswig. Also step-daughter-in-law, Joyce Roecker of Manning; eighteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; nine step-grandchildren; thirteen step-great-grandchildren and two step-great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison, Iowa. Fr. John Thomas served as Celebrant of the Mass and grave side rites held at St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Westphalia, Iowa. Organist Jean Cornelius provided the organ accompaniment for the St. Rose of Lima Choir. Diane Janning served as Reader and Kevin Cary and Quintin Brotherton were Altar Servers. Those serving as pallbearers were: Bruce Roecker, Ross Roecker, Chet Roecker, Kelly Reimers, Stacy O'Brien, Brad Roecker, Kirk Roecker, and Ryan Knapp. A Legion of Mary Rosary was held at 4:30 p.m., and a Parish Vigil at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Altar Society. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.
