Martin Frederick Spiegel was born June 21, 1923, the son of Harry and Mahela (Neubaum) Spiegel. He died at Eventide Nursing Home in Denison, Iowa, November 21, 2006, at the age of 83.

Martin was born on the family farm in rural Charter Oak, Iowa, baptized July 22, 1923, and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith on April 5, 1936 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township. He graduated from Charter Oak High School with the class of 1940. When Martin's father died suddenly in November of 1943, he began helping his mother take care of the family farm.

On September 16, 1945, Martin was united in marriage to Lois Ann Thomsen at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township. To this union three children were born. Together they continued to farm and in 1983 received a Century Farm award. In September 1995 the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. In their later years Martin and Lois enjoyed going on bus tours together. Lois preceded Martin in death on January 25, 1997.

Martin devoted his life to caring for his family. He loved living and working on the farm. He was a 4-H leader and served on the extension council for many years. From 1976-1984 he served as a supervisor for Crawford County. He also held numerous offices at St. Paul Lutheran church, was a delegate for the LCMS National Conventions, and was in charge of the cemetery board for many years, helping assist with the history and maintenance of the church. Most recently, he served on the board at Eventide Nursing Home.

In addition to his loving wife, Lois, Martin was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Harold in 1922, and his sister, Alvina in 1938. Those left to cherish his memory include two sons, Richard and his wife Debbie, Mark and his wife Linda, all of Charter Oak; one daughter Lori Mozer and her husband, Dennis, of Rock Valley, Iowa. Eight grandchildren; Ryan Spiegel and wife Tiffany of Omaha, Nebraska, Seth Spiegel and wife Jennifer of St. Cloud, Minnesota, Nathan Spiegel and wife Sara of Carbondale, Illinois, Nicole De Jong and husband David of Pella, Iowa, Melissa Spiegel, Jarod Mozer, Joshua Mozer, and Christopher Spiegel; one great granddaughter Reese Spiegel; three sisters, Margaret and her husband Jim Diley of Columbus, Ohio, Harriet Gress and her husband Charles of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Donna Siemer of Fort Dodge, Iowa, one brother Robert Spiegel and his wife Lynda of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and many other relatives, friends, and neighbors.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 25, 2006 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Eugene Ernst officiated the services and grave side rites held at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. Organist Shirley Stull provided the organ accompaniment for the congregational hymns: "How Great Thou Art," "Lift High the Cross," and "Jesus, Lead Thou On." Those serving as pallbearers were: Russell Westphalen, Dean Bohlmann, Mike Ashbrook, Randy Bohlmann, Gailen Meseck, and Jerry Stull. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.
