Vera was born in Buck Grove, Iowa and was baptized in Christ November 5, 1927 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Buck Grove and later confirmed there on February 2, 1941. She received her education in a country school near her home and graduated from the Denison High School with the class of 1945. The couple made their home on a farm near Buck Grove, until moving to the Carstens family farm in 1956.

She was a great mother who loved her family dearly and spoke often of the importance of forgiveness. Her family was very important to her and always came first, as she left teaching to stay home and raise her children.

She also was very active on the farm and was willing to help Lloyd with much of the day-to-day duties. In her leisure time, Vera enjoyed flower gardening, having coffee with her Monday Morning ladies group, and cooking. Her family especially looked forward to having her crispy chicken and macaroni and cheese. She was a very active member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Buck Grove, and a past member of their Ladies Aid.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers-in-law: John Winter and Vernon Janssen; her son, Gary; and her husband, Lloyd.
