Phyllis M. Gosch was born April 11, 1924, the daughter of Theodore and Hilda Jurgensen Ernst. She died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital, Sunday, October 8, 2006, at the age of eighty-two.

Phyllis was born on the family farm near Schleswig, Iowa where she grew up, receiving her education in a rural school near her home. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grant Township south of Ida Grove, Iowa.

On February 13, 1944, Phyllis was united in marriage to John H. Gosch at Trinity Lutheran Church. The couple settled on a farm southeast of Schleswig and were blessed with the birth of four children. The couple remained on the farm until John's death in 1988 and Phyllis moved to Schleswig.

Phyllis was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who had an inspiring faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She especially enjoyed her children and grandchildren and occupied her leisure time socializing with family and friends at a game of cards, sewing and mending; making homemade sauerkraut; baking buns, cinnamon rolls and mashed potatoes to be remembered. Her extended family included her neighbors for whom she had a deep and lasting affection. Other social activities included senior citizen and fellowship clubs. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig; Ladies Aid, serving three times as secretary; LWML, serving as secretary in 1990 and 1991; and various quilting groups.

She was preceded in death by one son, Howard in 1952; her husband, John in 1988; two grandchildren, Timothy Gosch in 1982 and Jacob Gosch in 1988. Her parents in 1983; a sister, Carol Schmadeke; and a brother, Vernon Ernst.

Survivors include: one son, Marc Gosch and his wife, Sharon of Denison; two daughters, Cindy Gosch and Janet Roecker and her husband, Brad all of Indianola; seven grandchildren: David, Matt, Chris, Nathan and Jamie Gosch; Haley and Mitchell Roecker; one brother, Merle Ernst and his wife, Lois of Schleswig; one sister, Audrey Munson and her husband, Jim of Bauzite, Arkansas. One brother-in-law, Louis Schmadeke and his wife, Dorothy of Arthur; and sister-in-law, Darlene Ernst of Schleswig. Other special friends include Davahn Lovan (David) and her children, Mercedes and Alex of Denison; Donna Burns of Indianola; other nieces, nephews, relatives and neighbors.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. On Tuesday, October 10, 2006 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Grant Township, Ida Grove, Iowa. Organist Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus", "Just as I Am, Without One Plea" and "I Know that My Redeemer Lives". Honorary pallbearers were: Deloris Riessen, Leola Schultz, Melvin Flynn, Bill Benson, Carmen Schmidt, Darlene Ernst, Shae Hansen, Lance Moore and the Zamago Family. Pallbearers were: Tim Schmadeke, Nathan Gosch, Marc Gosch, David Gosch, Matt Gosch, Chris Gosch and Jamie Gosch. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig was in charge of arrangements.
