In the spring of 1854, the first Mass was celebrated in the new church... In September, 1854, Bishop Loras paid his last visit. In July, 1857, Father McDermott came to DeWitt.

I was in the first confirmation class ever in De Witt, October 1859, the Bishop being Bishop Smith.

Julie, This is an excerpt from a transcript on the Clinto co website on the IowaGenWeb. (history of St. Joseph's parish) On the 1856 & 1860 Patrick FLINN is in Washington twp. which is right above DeWitt twp. I think this is your padre Bernard McDermott. Contact the archivist at St. Joe's. Dick
