Joseph Allen Davis

IOWA CITY — Joseph Allen Davis, 51, of Iowa City and formerly of Clinton, died Friday at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Lemke Funeral Homes, North Chapel, 2304 N. Second St. Burial will be in the Springdale Cemetery, Clinton. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, 2020 N. Third St., with an additional visitation one hour prior to the service time. The Rev. Nathaniel Johnson will be officiating.

Pallbearers will be Melvin Caldwell, Jordon Jordon, Glenn White, Manuel James, Skip Willits, Allen Stubblefield, Terry Freels, Kevin Mimms, Daryl James and Preston James.

He was born June 27, 1954, in Winchester, Ky., to Wallace and Reubena Green Davis.

He graduated from Clinton High School in 1972. He later graduated from the University of Iowa. He was selected for the University of Iowa Law School Hubbard Fellowship.

He was employed as a program coordinator with the Veterans’ Administration Hospital, Iowa City. He was a literacy teacher for a volunteer reading program at the University of Iowa.

He was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church, Winchester. He attended Second Baptist Church, Clinton. He was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and the Alpha Pheta Chapter. He participated in the art exhibit at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He was a docent tour guide at the University Iowa Museum of Art. He was selected to represent the University of Iowa Museum of Art, museum education conference, Washington, D.C. He was a founder of The Black Culture Club at Clinton High School.

Survivors include his mother, Reubena Davis of Clinton; one sister, Mrs. Carol L. (Dr. Arthur) Mardis of Keokuk; six brothers, Wallace E. Davis of Clinton, Winfred T. Davis of Clinton, Gary F. (Teresa) Davis of Camanche; Michael E. Davis of Clinton, Charles C. Davis of Aurora, Ill., Bobby R. Davis of Davenport; three nieces, nine nephews and one godchild niece; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.
