Harold W. Swanson

MAQUOKETA — Harold W. Swanson, 74, of Maquoketa, died Sunday at his home.

There will be a celebration of his life at 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, Maquoketa. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Carson and Son Funeral and Cremation Services, Maquoketa, where a 7 p.m. masonic service will be conducted by Helion Lodge 36 AF&AM, Maquoketa. Graveside services and burial will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the McCormick Cemetery, rural Ottumwa.

He was born June 4, 1931, in rural Ottumwa to Arnold J. Swanson and Gladys L. Mullenix Swanson.

He was an Agency High School graduate and then attended Parsons College in Fairfield for two years. He then received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa in 1958 and master’s degree in 1963.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Korean War from 1952 to 1954.

He was a business teacher at Maquoketa High School from 1958 to 1974. He then became a sales representative for Reader’s Digest Quality School Plan from 1974 until retiring in 1997. He also taught night school at Clinton Community College for several years and worked as a substitute teacher.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Maquoketa; Masonic Helion Lodge 36 AF&AM, Maquoketa; and Maquoketa Country Club where he served as past president. He was a former member of the Maquoketa Optimist Club.

Survivors include his wife; children, Nancy Swanson of Gunnedah, New South Wales, Australia, Mrs. Becky (Jerry) Miller of Blue Grass, Mrs. Sheri (Brad) Hilligoss of Coal Valley, Ill., and Doug (Sharon) Swanson of Eldridge; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two brothers, Charles (Dorothy) Swanson of Agency and Richard (Jo) Swanson of Allie.

A Harold W. Swanson memorial fund has been established.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandchild.
