Lester Henry Mangold

Laguna Woods, California

April 1, 1920 – December 2, 2005

Lester Henry Mangold, 85, of Laguna Woods, California died Friday, December 2, 2005, at Orange Coast Memorial Hospital, where he was undergoing aggressive chemotherapy for leukemia.

Mr. Mangold was born April 1, 1920 to Edward and Rose (Zimmerman) Mangold in Delaware County, Iowa, and grew up on his family farm near Ryan. He was schooled in the rural schools, graduated from Manchester High School, and received his Bachelor of Science in Commerce from the University of Iowa in 1943.

He then served for three years in the U.S. Army. Hospitalized for a year with hepatitis contracted in the Philippines, he resolved to live an active and appreciative life after his recovery.

He married Phyllis Brandau of Rudd, Iowa on December 21, 1946 in Iowa City. He attained his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification in 1949, and was in private practice in Clinton, Iowa from 1950 to 1978.

His hobbies in Clinton included gardening, camping, hunting, fishing and working in church, civic and social organizations.

After retiring to Laguna Hills (now Laguna Woods), California, he worked as a tax advisor and accountant through area banks and firms. He enjoyed square dancing, bridge, cribbage, checkers, swimming, personal investments along with rose and vegetable gardening.

He was International Treasurer of the Wally Byam Caravan Club, International (WBCCI), attending and leading several rallies and caravans nationwide and through Mexico, Canada, Europe and New Zealand. He was a member of the Rotary Club, the American Legion, and the Geneva Presbyterian Church.

He was an amazing trainer and friend of dogs.

The youngest child of his family, he was preceded in death by his brother Edward Mangold II, and sisters Merna Hamblin, Marion Falconer, Helen Suthers and Marjorie Cloud.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis, of Laguna Woods, his sister-in-law Harriet of Manchester, Iowa, sons Lester and Martin and their wives Sally and Jane of Modesto, California and Rockville, Maryland, and grandchildren Alexandra, Katharine, Benjamin and Barrett.

A Memorial Celebration of Life will be held December 31, 2005 at 11:00 am at Clubhouse 2 of Leisure World in Laguna Woods, California. Family, friends and happy acquaintances are warmly invited. Committal of ashes will be at Golden Congregational Church outside of Ryan, Iowa on April 15, 2006. Arrangements are being coordinated by the Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Manchester, Iowa.
