William Mackenzie

William “Van” MacKenzie, 95, of Clinton, IA, died Tuesday, December 13, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center, Clinton.

Services will be held at the Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Home & Crematory on Friday, December 16, 2005 at 10:00 AM. Visitation will be at the Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig on Thursday, December 15, 2005 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Burial will be in the Clinton Lawn Cemetery, where full Military Honors will be conducted by the AMVETS. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren.

He was born on December 13, 1910, in Davenport, IA, the son of William and Nellie (Burdick) MacKenzie. He attended the Davenport, Iowa Schools. He worked for Northwestern Bell Co. as a toll tester. He worked in Davenport for several years and then transferred to Clinton, after working for 41 years he retired in 1969. Van and his wife also operated an apartment rental business in Clinton for 23 years.

He married Florence S. Stichter Frey on May 12, 1941 in Kahoka, Missouri.

Van was a member of the AMVETS post #28, the Izaack Walton League for many years, Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Telephone Pioneers, American Legion, AARP, and he was a former Boy Scout Commissioner.

Van was a United States Air Force WWII veteran, he was a cryptographer in the Signal Corps where he coded and decoded secret messages. He served in the Military until 1945 after attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards and traveling in their motor home, but most of all he adored his family.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Florence S. MacKenzie of Clinton, 2 daughters, Jan MacKenzie and Julie and her husband Dan Mulholland both of Clinton, IA; 6 grandchildren: Dr. Renee Lass of Bettendorf, Iowa; Cathryn Lass of Davenport, Iowa; Jason Mulholland, Tara Mulholland, Angie Sullivan and Adria Mulholland all of Clinton; 3 great-grandchildren: Justin, Tyler and Macy; also surviving are his brother, E. P. MacKenzie of Nichols, IA; his sisters, Mary MacKenzie of Dubuque, IA; and Glenne Bowers of Davenport, IA; he is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including his special niece, Nancy Olson of Clinton, IA.

Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
