Edward Banta 01/27/1999 DeWITT, Iowa -- Services for J. Edward Banta, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., formerly of DeWitt, will be 11 a.m. Friday at Nelson Funeral Home, DeWitt. Burial will be at a later date in Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt. Visitation is 3-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Mr. Banta died Jan. 19, 1999, at Vassar Brothers Hospital, Poughkeepsie, after a brief illness. He was an owner and operator of Howard Johnson's Restaurant, Arlington, N.Y., from 1941 until his retirement. He also was associated with Smith Brother's Restaurant during the early 1950s. He was born Aug. 27, 1909, in Wheatland, Iowa. He married Josephine McDermott in 1941 in DeWitt. She died in 1996. Mr. Banta served in the medic unit of the Army during World War II. Survivors include a daughter, Sarah Fredrickson, Poughkeepsie; and a granddaughter.
