MAQUOKETA — Donald L. “Don” Babcock, 78, of Maquoketa, died Friday at the Maquoketa Care Center.
There will be a celebration of his life at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Lutheran Church, Maquoketa, with the Rev. Gerald Gjerde officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Carson and Son Funeral and Cremation Services in Maquoketa. Burial will be in the Hickory Grove Cemetery, rural Maquoketa, where full military rites will be accorded by Maquoketa American Legion Post 75, Maquoketa VFW Post 3633 O’Connor-Regenwether and Andrew AMVETS Post 62.
He was born July 18, 1927, in Oxford Junction to Dillion L. and Grace A. Henek Babcock. He married Elsie M. Keister on Feb. 22, 1947, in Maquoketa.
He was a 1944 graduate of Oxford Junction High School.
He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy.
He worked with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad from 1944 to 1955. He then farmed in the Maquoketa area from 1955 until his retirement in 1995.
He was a member of Maquoketa VFW Post 3633 O’Connor-Regenwether and Maquoketa American Legion Post 75 where he served as historian and past commander. He also was one of the originators of the Avenue of Flags at Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa.
Survivors include his wife; children, Ronald (Susan) Babcock of Monticello, Michael (Julie) Babcock of Maquoketa and Mrs. Kathy (Gary) Ihrig of Maquoketa; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Sharon Schwirtz of Oak Creek, Wis.
A Donald L. Babcock Memorial Fund has been established.
