The Clinton Herald Monday October 28, 1963 p. 11 Ralph L. (Bob) Root, 72, of Gull Lake, Mich., formerly of Clinton, died Saturday. He had been in failing health for six weeks. Funeral services will be at Plainwell, Mich., Wednesday. The body will be returned to Clinton where graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Oakland cemetery. Mr. Root was born in Duningville, Mich., Feb. 10, 1891. He enlisted in the army in Cedar Rapids in 1916 and served under Gen. John J. Pershing at Brownsville, Texas. He married May Pauline Sutton of Clinton on July 13, 1917. After serviing overseas during World War I, he returned to Clinton and lived here until 1923, when the couple moved to Plainwell. He was a charter member of June Van Meter Post 190, American Legion, before transferring his membership to the Walter Miller Post 250 in Plainwell, of which he served as commander. He also commanded the Allegan County American Legion. A member of the Presbyterian Church, he was active in several Masonic organizations. He is survived by his widow, one daughter, Mrs. Cathleen Windbiel; one grandson, both of Battle Creek, Mich.; one sister, two brothers and several nieces and nephews.
