The Clinton Herald Monday February 11, 1963 p. 11 George Joens, 88, of 337 14th Ave. S., died Saturday afternoon in Jane Lamb Hospital. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Snell-Smith funeral home with the Rev. E.C. Nielsen of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Springdale cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home. Mr. Joens was born Aug. 21, 1874 in Germany, a son of Jurgen and Anna Hansen Joens. The family came to the United States when he was a child. A member of the German society in Clinton, he was baptised in the Lutheran faith. He married Christine Ipsen Feb. 9, 1898 in Clinton, who preceded him in death in 1949. He retired 24 years ago as a machinist for the Chicago and North Western railroad. Surviving are six daughters, Mrs. Helen Stepanek of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Elsie Monaghan and Mrs. William Sievers, both of Clinton, Mrs. Jay Vogel and Mrs. Merlin Howe of Morrison, Ill., and Mrs. Gary Bakke of Sycamore, Ill., thre sons, Walter J. of West Chicago, Frank J. of Cedar Rapids and Harold J. of Clinton; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and six sisters.
