Joseph S. Cotton, 80, of Clinton, Iowa, died Saturday, May 14, 2005, at Mercy North Medical Center in Clinton. Funeral services will be held Tuesday 10:30 a.m. at the Faith Lutheran Church in Andover, Iowa. Visitation will be held Monday 3-8 p.m. at the Pape Funeral Home in Clinton. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Clinton. Joseph is survived by his wife, Helen; son, Tom (Kathleen) Cotton; daughter, Mrs. Cynthia (Richard) Cram; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorials may be given to the Mercy Medical Center or Eagle Point Nursing Home. Published in the Quad-City Times on 5/15/2005.

The Clinton Herald Monday May 16, 2005 p. 11A Joseph S. Cotton, age 80 of Clinton, died Saturday, May 14, 2005 at Mercy North Medical Center in Clinton. Funeral services will be held Tuesday 10:30 AM at the Faith Lutheran Church in Andover. Visitation will be held Monday 3 to 8 PM at the Pape Funeral Home in Clinton. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in Clinton. Pallbearers will be Christopher, Bruce, Sara, Amanda, and Michael Cotton, Emily Cram, Joe Delaney, and Kevin Thielan. Memorials may be given to the Mercy Medical Center, Faith Lutheran Church, or the Eagle Point Nursing Home. Joseph was born on Oct. 11, 1924 in Sabula, IA, the son of Joseph and Emily (Thompson) Cotton. He was graduated from Sabula High School in 1942. He was a US Army veteran serving with the 543rd Engineer Boat and Short Regiment in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre. His campaigns include the Bismark Archipelago, New Guinea and the Southern Philippines. He received the Bronze Service Arrowhead and a Purple Heart. He was awarded a Soldier's Medal for saving a fellow soldiers life after his landing craft struck a Japanese mine near Mindanao, Philipine Islands on March 15, 1945. Joe and the soldier he saved were the only survivors from the landing craft. Joseph married Helen Struve on July 26, 1947 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. He was co-owner/operator of Cotton Brothers Plumbing & Heating & Gas Company for over 45 years. After retirement, he was a livestock farmer on the family farm for many years. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Andover, Clinton Bicycle Club, VFW in Sabula, and the American Legion in Sabula. He enjoyed bicycling, boating, and traveling. Joseph is survived by his wife, Helen; son Tom (Kathleen) Cotton of Clinton; daughter, Mrs. Cynthia (Richard) Cram of rural Clinton; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren; and four nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
