MOUNT CARROLL, Ill. — Norman L. Coatney, 71, of Mount Carroll, died Saturday.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mount Carroll. The Rev. Robert Ziebarth, pastor of Mount Carroll First Baptist Church, will be officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Mount Carroll, with full military rites. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
He was born June 17, 1934, in Prairie Town, Ill., to Kenneth and Hulda Knoche Coatney. He married Sharon Halsall in Galva, Ill., on June 7, 1959. She died in 2000.
He graduated from Bunker Hill (Ill.) High School in 1952. He graduated from Western Illinois University, Macomb, Ill. He earned his master’s degree at Northern Illinois University, Dekalb, Ill.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a staff sergeant with the 48th Field Artillery Battalion.
He spent 30 years in teaching and administration in the Carroll County, Ill., schools.
He served as president in the Carroll County Retired Teachers Association, Savanna Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2223 and Mount Carroll American Legion Post 67. He was president of the Hospice of Northwest Illinois and was an active member of Ducks Unlimited.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Jennifer (Kenneth) Lucas of Fond du Lac, Wis.; two sons, Rhett (Keller) Coatney of Thomson, Ill., and Kurt Coatney of Savanna; four grandchildren; one brother, Maurice (Dee) Coatney of Godfrey, Ill.; and one sister, Kathleen Dubblede of Bethalto, Ill.
