Verna A. Luke

MAQUOKETA — Verna A. Luke, 92, of Maquoketa, died Wednesday at the Jackson County Public Hospital in Maquoketa.

There will be a celebration of her life at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Carson and Son Funeral and Cremation Services, Maquoketa, with the Rev. Gerald Gjerde, pastor of First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa, officiating. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until the service time Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery, rural Maquoketa.

She was born March 30, 1913, north of Andrew to Chris and Bertha Siegel Hankemeier. She married Raymond J. Luke on Oct. 18, 1952, in Maquoketa. He died in 2003.

She attended country schools north of Andrew.

She was a homemaker. She and her husband served as church custodians of First Lutheran Church, Maquoketa, for more than 33 years.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church.

Survivors include two children, Richard “Dick”(Jane) Moeller of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and Mrs. Lois (Wayne) Schepers of Delmar; one sister, Mrs. Bernice (Arnold) Bartels of Delmar; two brothers, Edwin (Madonna) Hankemeier and Robert “Bob”(Velma) Hankemeier, both of rural Maquoketa; seven grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, American Diabetes Foundation or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
