Robert Leroy Maurus

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — Robert Leroy Maurus, 83, of Leesburg and formerly of Rock Island, died October 14, 2005 at the Leesburg Regional Medical Center, Leesburg.

Memorial services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, at Broadway Presbyterian Church, Rock Island. Inurnment will be in the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, where military honors will be presented by VFW Post 1303 and American Legion Posts 200 and 569. Visitation is 4:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, at the Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Quad City Botanical Center, Rock Island, for a veterans garden.

Mr. Maurus was born, March 10, 1922 at home in Rock Island, the son of Gustav Alois “Gus” and Minnie (Grimmenga) Maurus. He married Hellen Martha Nordin in 1946. He later married Simonne J. Moore, in 1997.

Bob graduated from Rock Island High School in 1940; he received his BME from Augustana College in 1949 and his MM from the University of Iowa in 1956. He was a vocal music educator and taught at United Township High School and with the Rock Island Public Schools for 25 years, retiring in 1983. Bob also was a church choir director and insurance salesman.

Bob was a decorated veteran of W.W. II, serving with the U.S. Marine Corps and received the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a resident of Rock Island for 82 of his 83 years and a member of Broadway Presbyterian Church for most of those years. He was a Rock Island City Councilman for 24 years and served on the Planning Commission. Bob was a member of the Vikings Barbershop Quartet who won the International Barbershop Championship in 1953 and a member of the Association of International Champions.

Survivors include his wife, Simonne; children (and spouses), Jeffrey (Jo Ellen) Maurus, Rock Island, Marsha (Kirk) Zaranti, Naperville, IL, John (Deena) Maurus, Rock Island, Marlene “Gina” (Dave) Bergstrom, Brookfield, IL; 13 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Edna Brenstrom.
