Mrs. Elsie L. Schnack, 95, DeWitt, Iowa, died Thursday, July 21, 2005, at Westwing Place in DeWitt.
Family and friends may visit at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 2 until 6 p.m. Sunday. Service of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday, July 25, 2005, at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt. Rev. Keith Speaks will officiate. Interment will be in Clinton Lawn Cemetery.
Mrs. Schnack, the former Elsie Lena Schroder, was born March 10, 1910, in Gosefeld, Germany, the daughter of Friedrich and Theodora (Lorenzen) Schroder. Elsie married John P. Schnack on December 14, 1929. John P. died June 3, 1956. She later was married to Helmut Schnack on May 16, 1965, in DeWitt. Helmut died July 14, 1998.
After coming from Germany, Elsie lived the rest of her life in the DeWitt area. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt, and a member of the Elizabeth Circle and former Ladies Aid of the church. She loved her family very much and was always interested in what they were doing. She was an avid Hawkeyes fan. Elsie was also a member of the DeWitt Community Hospital Auxiliary. She was also a longtime Clinton County Farm Bureau member. Elsie was very proud to be an American.
Surviving are two daughters, Dorothy Bean and Elizabeth and her husband Roland Niemann, and two sons, Guenther Schnack and John H. Schnack, all from DeWitt; 12 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Marta Petersen, Wichita, Kansas, (formerly from Tipton, Iowa); and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husbands, Elsie was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Darcey Schnack Graham, and seven sisters, including her twin sister, Henni Zastrow Wiechmann, who all died in Germany.
Pallbearers will be Steve Niemann, Wade Niemann, Jim Bean, David J. Schnack, John P. Schnack II, David Lupo and Jeff Schuetzle. Honorary pallbearers will be John Hythecker, Doug Todd, Ingo Petersen, Rolf Schnack, Frantz Schnack, Karl Maass and Benny Schnack.
The family suggests memorials to Grace Lutheran Church, Westwing Place or Genesis Hospice.
