SAN JOSE, Calif. — Ellen R. Spalding, 85, of San Jose, Calif., and formerly of Clinton, died September 16, 2005, at her home in San Jose.

A memorial service was held on September 23 at Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Cupertino, CA. Arrangements for graveside services and burial at Clinton Lawn Cemetery are pending.

She was born November 26, 1919, to Herman and Minnie Rossow Raddatz at their home in Redwood Falls, Minnesota. She married Carl A. Spalding, of Wanda, MN., on August 17, 1943, at the Army Chapel in Pittsburg, California. He preceded her in death in 1996.

She was a 1937 graduate of Redwood Falls High School. She met her husband, Carl, while employed by the United States Army during World War II. After the war, she and Carl lived in various locations in Minnesota and Iowa before settling in Clinton in 1958. She worked for several years at A. C. Nielsen, and was later employed at Jane Lamb Memorial Hospital. After retirement, she and Carl moved to San Jose in 1978.

While in Clinton, she was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her children, Karlynn Emanuel of San Jose, Mrs. Sandra (John) Peters of Valparaiso, In., and Walt (Ann) Spalding of Healdsburg, Ca.; four grandchildren; one brother, Donald (Minnie) Raddatz of Burnsville, Mn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two sisters.
