Lowell P. Struckman, 88, of Savanna, Ill., died Wednesday October 5, 2005 at Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. The Rev. Michael Jones, pastor of York Baptist Church in Thomson, will be officiating. Burial will be in Oak Knoll Cemetery, Sterling, Ill. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna.

He was born April 18, 1917, to Paul Andrew and Hattie Irene Johnson Struckman in Sterling. He married Audrey R. Seeger on Sept. 7, 1940, in Clinton.

He graduated from Savanna Township High School in 1935.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He owned and operated a dry cleaning business for 10 years in Savanna. In 1961, he began a career with the U.S. Postal Service in Savanna as a substitute rural carrier, which led to promotions and ultimately being appointed postmaster. He retired in 1980.

He was a member of the United Church of Christ, Savanna, where he was a Sunday school teacher from 1961 to 1965. He served on the Savanna City Hospital Board, Savanna High School Board from 1957 to 1959, was a member of the Savanna Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, American Legion Van Bibber Post 148, lifetime member of Savanna Moose Lodge 1095, National League of Postmasters, National Association of Postmasters of the United States, Lee, Whiteside, Carroll and Ogle counties Postmasters Association and the Boy Scouts of America Association.

He was very involved in the Boy Scouts of America. He was instrumental in organizing the Boy Scout Summer Camporees in northwestern Illinois at Palisades State Park from 1955 to 1960.

Survivors include his wife; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
