Mrs. Janice J. Rickertsen, 83, of DeWitt, Iowa, died Friday, June 17, 2005, at Westwing Place, DeWitt, Iowa.
Mrs. Rickertsen, the former Janice Johanna Petersen, was born April 13, 1922, in rural Preston, Iowa, the daughter of Peter and Marie (Fries) Petersen. She graduated from the former Welton High School. During World War II she was employed at a Clinton grocery store. Following his return from the war, Janice was united in marriage to Alfred N. Rickertsen Sept. 16, 1945, at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt. The couple rented various farms in their early married years and purchased their own farm 1 ˝ miles east of DeWitt, in the mid 50's. Janice loved farming with Alfred and they farmed together until they retired to the city of DeWitt in 1983.
Janice was a lifetime and devout member of Grace Lutheran Church. She was also active in the Church Couple's Club and Ladies Aid where she held offices in each. Her church and faith were of utmost importance, which led to her lasting tribute of donating the funds to build the Welton Chapel at Grace Camp in memory of her beloved husband, Alfred. Janice loved her family dearly and enjoyed spending time with them. She and Alfred also enjoyed traveling and entertaining family.
Surviving are two daughters, Gwenlyn Grantz and her husband, David, Goose Lake, Iowa, and Jaclyn Bisinger and her husband, Joseph, Monmouth, Iowa; five grandchildren, Wayne (Tori) Grantz, Scott (Jeni) Grantz, Luke (fiancé, Shonna Hoag) Grantz, Janna (fiancé, Nathan Becker) Bisinger and Justin Bisinger; two brothers, Clifton (Ruth) Petersen, Bellevue, Iowa, Arwin Petersen, DeWitt; two sisters-in-law, Velma and Marie Rickertsen, Charlotte, Iowa; numerous nieces and nephews; a special friend, Marilyn Petersen.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred on Sept. 27, 1990, her parents and a sister, Beverly Petersen.
The family will receive relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 19, 2005, and from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. Monday, June 20, 2005, at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt. Funeral services are 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Church. The Rev. Terry Ellis and the Rev. Garland Gotoski will be officiating. Interment will be held in the Clinton Lawn Cemetery, Clinton, Iowa.
Pallbearers will be Justin Bisinger, Wayne Grantz, Scott Grantz, Luke Grantz, Leonard Rickertsen and Bob Stiegerwaldt. The family suggests memorials to Grace Camp for the upkeep of Welton Chapel.
