Mr. George W. Otey, 96, of DeWitt, Iowa, died Saturday evening, Jan. 8, 2005, at The Alverno Health Care Facility, Clinton, Iowa.
George Webster Otey was born July 25, 1908, in Pittsburg, Ill., one of seven children born to William and Sydney Otey. He served in the Army during World War II. He married Lucile Yegge March 20, 1948, in Maywood, Ill. He worked for the Veterans Administration Hospital at Hines, Ill., in the Physical Therapy Department until retirement. He was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, DeWitt, the Eugene McManus American Legion Post No. 238, DeWitt, and the National Federation of Federal Employees. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also was a Chicago sports fan.
Surviving are his loving wife of nearly 57 years, Lucile; a daughter, Sharon Nicola, Calumet City, Ill.; two grandchildren, Kim and Michael; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by a son, George Dean Otey, his parents, three sisters, and three brothers.
Family and friends may visit at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 4 until 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005. Funeral Service 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at First Congregational United Church of Christ, DeWitt. The Rev. Ginger Taylor officiating. Burial at Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt. Memorials are suggested to First Congregational United Church of Christ or the Alverno Health Care Facility.
Pallbearers will be Doug Yegge, Jim Kedley, Mark Yegge, Mike O'Connor, Dan O'Connor, and Brian O'Connor. Honorary pallbearers will be Leo Fier, Ivan Barber, Joe Perino, Albert Green, Rusty Starck, and John Golitz.
The family extends their thanks to The Alverno and Dr. Steven Hanas for the wonderful care they provided to George. Also special thanks go to Jim and Laurel Kedley, and Doug Yegge, for all of their assistance. A photo tribute may be viewed at schultz funeral homes.
