Lester E. Burgess, Jr., 83, of Clinton, Iowa, died Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa.
Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at the Evangelical Free Church, Clinton, with Rev. Tom Loyola officiating. Burial will be in the Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Roger, Gary, Bryon, and Lorne Burgess. Visitation will be Monday from 4-8 p.m. at the Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig-Dennis A. Lemke Funeral Homes and Crematory. Additional visitation will be 9:30 a.m. to the service time Tuesday at the church.
Lester E. Burgess, Jr., was born on May 19, 1921, in Gloversville, N.Y., the son of Lester and Rose (VanVranken) Burgess. He married Arlene Shadle on June 12, 1948, in Clinton. He attended public schools in Gloversville. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army as a Technical Sergeant in the South Pacific. He was employed with DuPont in the maintenance department for 26 years retiring in 1979. After his retirement, he worked for Goodyear as a small engine repairman.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene, of Clinton; four sons, Roger (Maureen Smith) Burgess, of Albany, Ill., Gary Burgess, of Clinton, Bryon (Nancy) Burgess, of Aurora, Colo., and Lorne (Katheryn) Burgess, of Davenport; one daughter, Cindy (Dan) Nelson, of Fulton, Ill.; two grandchildren, Sherry Nelson, and Nathan Burgess; one sister, Olive Hanchar, of Gloversville; and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Evangelical Free Church.
