Mr. LaVerne T. Ketelsen, 83, Clinton, Iowa, formerly of Charlotte and DeWitt, Iowa, died Wednesday morning, December 8, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center-South, Clinton, Iowa.
LaVerne Thomas Ketelsen was born Saturday, January 22, 1921, in Goose Lake, Iowa, to Thomas and Selma (Andresen) Ketelsen. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. LaVerne was united in marriage to the former Dorothy Boyer on January 27, 1944, in Corvalis, Oregon. The couple farmed near Charlotte until retirement in 1986. They moved to DeWitt, and then to Clinton. During his retirement, LaVerne worked at Eagle Point Park with the Department of Parks and Recreation. His wife preceded him in death on January 21, 2002. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Andover. LaVerne was an avid Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes basketball fan.
Survivors include five children, Larry (Colleen), Bemidji, Minnesota, David (Paula), Charlotte, Connie (Gary) Kent, Clinton, Loren (Sherri), Andover, Iowa, and Gary (Mary Jo), DeWitt; 11 grandchildren, Ryan (Shawna) Kent, Clint, Jamie Ketelsen, Craig, Chris Ketelsen, Stephanie, Brett and Derek Ketelsen and Amanda, Jenny and Emily Ketelsen; two great-grandchildren, Tyler Cahoy and Claire Ketelsen; two sisters, Esther Ploog and Velma Rickertsen, Charlotte; and a brother, Ronald (Betty Jo) Ketelsen, Clinton.
In addition to his wife, LaVerne was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and seven brothers.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday, December 10, at Clinton Lawn Cemetery. The Rev. Judy Heinrich-Wolf will officiate. Military rites and interment will follow. A memorial fund has been established.
