William R. "Bill" Grimm, 82, DeWitt, Iowa, passed away Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 30, 2004, at Genesis Medical Center, DeWitt.
Bill was born in DeWitt, March 26, 1922, to Louis and Bertha (Wynkoop) Grimm. He served in the Navy during World War II as a Boatswains Mate 2nd Class in the South Pacific aboard the USS Edgecomb and USS Carina. After farming with his family as a young boy, he worked for the City of DeWitt and W. H. Walker & Company. He retired in 1983 from Alcoa after 31 years of service.
His favorite pastimes were gardening, fishing and playing cards with the family. He was well known for his ability to fix "anything" and enjoyed repairing clocks and watches the most.
His family was the joy of his life and those left to honor him include his loving wife of 58 years, Jeanne; daughters, Phyllis Hernandez, and husband, Raymond, Long Grove, Iowa, and Cori Chapman, Round Lake Beach, Ill.; son, Kevin "Pete" Grimm, and wife, Sara, Eldridge, Iowa; six grandchildren, Bradley Hernandez, Heather Sachleben, Tiffany Chapman, Tara Chapman, Benjamin Grimm and Brianne Grimm; six great-grandchildren, Jacob Sachleben, Kelsey Hernandez, Alexis Sachleben, McKenna Hernandez, Tyler Chapman and William Hernandez; and a sister, Wanda Johannsen, and aunt, Ethel Walrod, both of DeWitt.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Kenneth and Lester, a sister, Alma Rowson, and great-grandson, Matthew Sachleben. May they rest in peace.
Relatives and friends are welcome to greet the family from 1 p.m. until a memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at First Congregational United Church of Christ, DeWitt. The Rev. Ginger Taylor will officiate. Eugene McManus American Legion Post 238 of DeWitt will conduct military rites at the church.
In lieu of flowers and other expressions of sympathy, a memorial fund has been established in Bill's name.
In honor of Bill's wishes, his body has been donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine.
