Allen Jean "A.J." Hannafan, 76, of Clinton, Iowa, died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center North in Clinton. Funeral services will be held at the Pape Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, with the Rev. Robert Kem and Deacon Ray Hilgendrof officiating. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funerl home. Burial will be in St. Irenaeus Calvary Cemetery.
Coach Hannafan was born on May 20, 1928, in Clinton, the son of Margaret Jepsen Hannafan. Following her death he was raised by his parents, Leonard and Helen Dose of Clinton.
His first teaching and coaching job was in Ruthven, Iowa, where he worked for four years. It was during this time that he met his future wife, Mary Lou Brandt. A.J. and Mary Lou were married on Aug. 6, 1955, in Clear Lake, Iowa.
Shortly after his marriage, Coach Hannafan returned to Clinton to begin 33 years as a teacher and coach at Lyons Junior High School. It was during these years that he became a positive role model for thousands of Clinton's youngsters. His life's passions included teaching, coaching, family, and friends.
A.J. is survived by his wife of 49 years and children, Terry, who lives in Madison, Wisc., Mary McCarty, from Woodbury, Minn., and John, who resides in Chicago, Ill.; and his grandchildren, Catie and Connor McCarty; and son-in-law Pat McCarty. Others survivors include his mother, Helen Dose, of Clinton; two sisters, Alice Dever, of Miles, Iowa, and Lucille Flug, of Florida; and brothers, Len Dose, of Bettendorf, Steve Dose, of Garland, Texas, Tom Dose, of Reno, Nevada, Tim Dose, of Eldridge, Iowa, Jim Dose, of Boone, Iowa, and Richard Hannafan, of Syracuse, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by his father Leonard W. Dose, Sr. and three brothers.
