Mary Kathleen Woods O'Connell, 74, died suddenly on Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at Genesis Medical Center-DeWitt Campus. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, with Father Robert Harness officiating the Mass. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday, Sept. 20, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and visitation will be Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may go to St. Joseph Making Connections Campaign, DeWitt Fire Department or DeWitt Police Department Animal Shelter Fund.
Mary was born March 14, 1930, in DeWitt, the daughter of Alfred and Hilda (Griebel) Woods. She was a graduate of DeWitt High School. She married Gerald J. O'Connell on Nov. 27, 1954, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt. She was employed as a secretary for Iowa Mutual Insurance Company for over 35 years, retiring in 1991. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society and Iowa Mutual 20 Year Club. She also was a member of the Eugene McManus Post No. 238 Auxiliary.
Survivors include three children, Deborah (Larry) Nortunen, of McAlester, Okla., and Joe (JoElla) O'Connell and Tom (Julie) O'Connell, of DeWitt; four grandchildren, Tony, Corrine, Bryan and Michael O'Connell, all of DeWitt; three brothers, Jack (Donna) Woods, of Bettendorf, Richard Woods, of DeWitt, and David (Bobbi) Woods, of Bradenton, Fla.; and three sisters, Jeanette (Richard) Mohr and Shirley Paasch, of DeWitt, and Mildred Thomas, of Linton, Ind. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three sisters and two brothers.
