John E. Kirst, 84 of Clinton, Iowa, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center North in Clinton. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at the Pape Funeral Home with the Rev. Dan Schadt officiating. Visitation will be on Sunday from 3-7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery will Military rites accorded by the AMVETS. Pallbearers will be Brent Judd, Brian Judd, Thomas Kirst, Andrew Kirst, Thomas McEleney and Rich Pladna.
John was born Dec. 3, 1919, in Clinton the son of John E. and Anna Broaderson Kirst. He was raised in the Lutheran faith. John graduated from Lyons High School in 1940. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Signal Corps with Patten's 3rd Army where he received a Bronze Star. John married Shirley M. Gaarde on Jan. 30, 1943, in Joslin, Mo. Shirley died on June 5, 1997.
John was employed with McEleney Motors in Clinton retiring in 1982. Following his retirement he continued to work at McEleney's as a driver until 1999. John was a member of the Clinton Horsemen's Association, the former Odeon Club and the 25 year club at McEleney Motors. He was an avid boater enjoying both skiing and fishing. John enjoyed giving buggy and sleigh rides with his horses. He snowed skied well into his 70's and rode ATV's after having to give up his horses. His grandchildren were an important part of his life.
John is survived by a daughter; Susan (Mike) Studholme, of Silvis, Ill.; a son, Dan (Gail) Kirst, of Clinton; and four grandchildren, Brent (Linda) Judd, of Bismark, N.D., Brian (Sophie) Judd, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Thomas Kirst, of Clinton and Andrew (Miranda) Kirst, of Des Moines.
John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers and one sister.
