Iva E. Smith, age 85, of Maquoketa, died Tuesday evening, October 12, 1999 at the Jackson County Public Hospital in Maquoketa. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 16, 1999 from the First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa, with Rev. Gerald Gjerde officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, October 15, 1999 at the Carson & Son Funeral and Cremation Service in Maquoketa. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery.
Iva E. Smith was born on April 27, 1914 in Clinton County, Iowa to Alfred Harksen and Hazel Myers Harksen. She married Henry D. "Tudie" Smith on January 18, 1945 in Kahoka, Missouri. He preceded her in death on April 3, 1992. Mrs. Smith was educated in Elvira grade schools and then graduated from DeWitt Community High School. Mrs. Smith and her husband managed the Maquoketa Country Club for 25 years. She had also worked for a telephone company in DeWitt, Iowa for 15 years, and then as a telephone operator at Union Station in Washington, D.C. for 5 years. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, visiting and entertaining friends.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Ron (Sue) Hovey of Maquoketa, Iowa; several nieces and nephews including Terri Vetter of DeWitt, Iowa; 3 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded indeath by her parents, husband, one brother and one sister.
