Aged Massillon Woman Dead: Buried Monday
Mrs. Lydia Cantonwine, aged 85, a resident of Massillon since her marriage to Jule [Julius] Cantonwine about fifty years ago, died at the home of her niece, Mrs. Bessye Mates, in St. Paul, Minn., December 4. She was brought back to her beloved old home town for burial. Mrs. Cantonwine, whose maiden name was Lydia Shoemaker, was born in Toronto [Iowa], Oct. 11, 1846, of pioneer parents. She was the granddaughter of Katherine Fridley, a pioneer who came to Iowa in the covered wagon days. The deceased spent her entire life in Toronto until about 50 years ago when she was married to Jule [Julius] Cantonwine and came to Massillon to make her home. Here she lived continually until about 15 years ago. Since then she has spent the winters with her niece in St. Paul, making the trips back and forth alone. The past two years she has been ill and remained in St. Paul. Her suffering ended when death claimed her Friday. The remains were shipped to Massillon and arrived here Monday. She was taken to her residence where friends watched over her Monday night. Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 the body was conveyed to the Massillon cemetery [Rose Hill Cemetery in Toronto] and laid to rest beside the parents and grandparents in the family lot. The services at the grave were read by Mrs. Dave Starling of Toronto.
