KROSS, MCGRATH, GOHLMAN, HERSOM, BERTELSEN

The Clinton Herald, Thursday August 31, 1939, p. 14. Claus R. Kross of Hauntown died at 9 o'clock Wednesday night in the family home after about a year's illness. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the home, the Rev. Father Dietz of Sabula officating. Interment will be in St. Irenaeus-Calvary cemetery, Clinton. Mr. Kross was born Sept. 25, 1876, near Sabula, receiving his education in the Sabula High school and in the college at Highland Park, Des Moines. He and Miss Kathryn E. McGrath were married Oct. 15, 1902 in Bryant and for the last 35 years have resided in Hauntown. He was very active in supervision of township and county roads and served for 32 years as Elk River township assessor. He leaves his wife and four children, Clarence of Low Moor, Maud of Dubuque, Ralph of Clinton and Earl of Onslow; three sisters, Mrs. Eva Gohlman of Spokane, Wash., Mrs. J.H. Hersom of Dixon, Ill., and Mrs. Hans Bertelsen of Box Elder, S.D. and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parent, three brothers and one sister.
The Clinton Herald Monday September 4, 1939 Funeral services for Claus R. Kross, Almont, were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the home with the Rev. Father Dietz, pastor of St. Peter's Catholic church, Sabula, officiating. Burial was in Calvary cemetery. August Schmidt, Edward Doyle, Leslie Struve, Kamm Smith, J.R. Carddock and Andrew Nielsen were pallbearers. Flower bearers were Mrs. Viola Zieche, Mrs. Alice Thompson, and the Misses Marilyn Schroder, Elsanna Connole and Ruth Carddock. Among those who attended were Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Hersham and daughters, Mrs. Irene Kreitzer, Mrs. Marguerite Underline and Margaret Mary Underline, Dixon, Ill.; Mrs. Winifred Winkler, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Macumber and Dwight Minkler, Davenport; Mr. and Mrs. O.H. Cole, Jean Guthrie and Elmer J. Miller, Dubuque; Mrs. Samuel Bertling and son, William, Worthington, as well as relatives and friends from Clinton, Milledgeville, Ill., and Savanna, Ill.
