"Engineer is Killed While at Throttle"
"Douglas D. Mansfield,69 of 305 Fourth Avenue South,Clinton, a veteran North Western railway locomotive engineer was instantly killed a mile and one-half east of Watkins Saturday afternoon at 4:25pm when a loose board from a car in a passing eastbound freight train crashed through the cab window of his engine breaking his neck and pinning him to his seat."
"A piece of board fifteen feet long, according to Mansfield's son, Dr. John M. Mansfield who made an investigation, was hurled from the loaded sheep car into Mansfield's cab and the blunt end struck him in the head and chest. A piece of the broken board thirty inches long. Dr. Mansfield said was found across the engine throttle afterward."
"Douglas Duane Mansfield wa born in Jan. 1863 in Clayton County, Iowa. He was married in July,1889 in Clinton to Miss Hannah Mellen of Clinton and leaves his wife, a daughter Mrs. Carl Mills of Minneapolis and a son Dr. John Mansfield of Clinton. His daughter-in-law Mrs. John Mansfield, two grandchildren: Charles B. Mills III and Martha Mansfield Mills. Mr. Mansfield leaves a sister Mrs. Mame Hammil of Des Moines, a sister-in-law Mrs. Ben Mansfield, brother-in-law Jonathan Mellen now ill in Jane Lamb Hospital Clinton, and a sister-in-law Mrs. Harry B. Oates of Peoria, Ill."
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 pm Tuesday in the home at 305 Fourth Avenue South, the Rev. Thomas Horton D.D. of St. John's Episcopal church officiating. Burial in Springdale Cemetery, Clinton."
