The news of the death of Miss Martha Nye, which came to DeWitt Friday in a message to Mrs. William Lee, struck a chord of sadness in many hearts in DeWitt, where Miss Nye was born and where she grew to noble womanhood. It was known that she had been ill for some weeks of typhoid fever, but the last word was that she was somewhat better, and her death comes as a shock, intensified by the fact that she was one whose scope of influence and usefulness was immeasurably broadened by her unusually excellent preparation along educational lines, and her personal Christian character and remarkable mentality. The body will be brought here from Rockford, Ill., where death occurred, and interred in Elmwood cemetery.

Martha Waldo Nye was born in DeWitt December 15, 1866 to Charles M. and Emma Nye, and died in Rockford, Ill., January 22, aged forty-eighty years. She spend her childhood in DeWitt and attended high school here with the class of 1885 going from here to Rockford Seminary, from which she was graduated in 1888. She then taught in Hall academy, Hall, Neb. for two years, attended the University of Michigan until 1891, and then returned to Rockford where she received the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1894. After this she was a student in the University of Chicago until 1898. She was elected to the chair of mathematics in Rockford, teaching there before she received her degree and in 1906 became registrar of the college. Four years later she was made head of the department of mathematics, and these two positions she held until her death. Several weeks ago her mother, sister and aunt went to Rockford to spend the winter with Miss Martha as was their custom each year, and they were with her during her illness. She is survived by her mother, Mrs. Emma Nye , one sister, Miss Susie K. Nye, one brother, Hon. George Merrell Nye of Denver, Colo., and her aunt Miss Susan R. Low of DeWitt. Vacations and holidays from school were all spent by Miss Nye at her home in DeWitt, and here she was deeply loved by innumerable friends and held in the highest esteem by every acquaintance. The Nyes pioneers in DeWitt, are among the first families of the town. Their acquaintance is wide and in this hour of sorrow unnumbered friends extend to them a silent tribute of sympathy sincere and deep.
