9 June 1917 - The Clinton Advertiser page 8

Lost Nation, Ia., June 8--The entire community was shocked when word reached here from Boulder, Colo., that John V. Wolfe had passed away. Though it was generally known that he was grievously smitten information received conveyed the belief that he was improving until Thursday afternoon when a message came that he had suffered a severe relapse. His parents left immediately for his bedside, but death had intervened before they could reach him.

John Vincent Wolfe, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. John B. Wolfe, was born at Lost Nation Sept. 5th, 1888, and died at Boulder, Colo. June 1, 1917. Ever of a bright and studious nature, the deceased was well equipped educationally for the duties of life. He began his studies in the parochial school of Lyons, Iowa; graduated from the Lost Nation High school with the class of 1906. He is the first of this class to answer the final roll call and by an odd coincidence, this happened eleven years, lacking one day, from the date of his graduation. Later he completed his education at Dubuque college. Following his graduation from the Dubuque college, he moved with his parents to Melrose, Ia., where he was married Oct. 28th, 1913, to Miss Elizabeth Haley of that place. In the spring of 1914, he with his bride returned to the old homestead at Lost Nation, from whence he moved to Torrington, Wyo., where he successfully engaged in agricultural pursuits. Early this year, he contracted a severe cold which later developed other complications and despite all that loving hands and the best of medical science could do, he gradually grew worse. As a last resource, he went to Boulder, Colo., in the hope that a change of climate might benefit, but it was all unavailing. He quietly and resignedly passed away, fortified by the last rites of the Catholic church, of which he was an exemplary and devoted member. John V. Wolfe was a young man of sterling qualities and a devoted husband and a true and loyal friend. He leaves to mourn his early death, a devoted wife, two children, his parents, seven brothers and one sister. All have the sincere sympathy of the entire community. A new home has been broken up and the lot of the wife bereft and of the children who will never know a father is indeed sad. His remains were brought to the old home at Lost Nation Monday morning, funeral services being held at the Sacred Heart church Tuesday. Requiem high mass was celebrated by Rev. O. J. Small, assisted by Rev. P. McNamara of Toronto and Rev. T. Votapek of Oxford Junction. Music was rendered by the choir, the Misses Esther and Rita Ales, Viola Newcomb and Winifred Kramer. Interment was at Toronto. The remains were carried to their last resting place by James McAndrews, Raymond Wolfe, D. D. Klise, Francis Wolfe, Raymond Mulvihill and Walter Wolfe. Those from a distance in attendance at the funeral were Judge P. B. Wolfe, Attorney J. L. Wolfe, J. G. McGrath, Mrs. T. D. Fitzgerald and daughter Margaret, Mrs. D. F. Langan, Mrs. P. Lyons and daughter of Clinton; Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Lahey and daughter Girginie of Fulton, Ill., Attorney R. B. Wolfe and family, Mrs. M. Scanlan and Cecil Wolfe of DeWitt; Dr. Jerry Wolfe of Grand Mound; Attorney W. I. Wolfe of Logan; Louis Klise and D. D. Klise of Menlo; Mrs. Leo Hefford of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. Thomas Nolan of Iowa City.
