James F. Smith, aged 83 years, and resident of Clinton for the last 19 years, died at 7 o'clock this morning, after an illness incident to old age, gangrene in his leg being the immediate cause of death.

Mr. Smith was born Sunday morning, March 25, 1834, in New Hampshire, and grew to manhood in that state and was married there. He came to Iowa and settled at Iowa City in the early sixties, and for many years was an engineer on the C.R.I. & P. railway.

Later he removed to Superior, Wis., there he went into the hardware business. After several years his wife died there and he retired from business, coming to Clinton to live with his son, J. A. Smith, 19 years ago.

Besides the son, there is surviving a nephew, William Hobbs, of Des Moines.

The deceased was known as a quiet, peaceful citizen who held the respect of a wide circle of friends who will miss his presence.

The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the late home on Bluff road and Nineteenth street with burial in Springdale cemetery. Friends please omit flowers.
