Grand Mound, Ia., Aug. 24--On Wednesday morning at his home in Berlin township occurred the death of Gustave Schanze after an illness of less than two weeks with an attack of heart failure and complications. He had been a patient sufferer for many years with asthma and although he had been in poor health, his demise came as a shock to his family, friends and neighbors.

Deceased was born in Meisingen, Germany, Oct. 1, 1845, and at his death was 72 years and 10 months of age. He was married to his surviving wife June 2d, 1871, and came to America in April, 1879, settling in Scott county, where they lived for several years, later moving to their farm in Berlin township, where he continued to reside until the final summons. Besides his widow, he leaves to mourn his loss five daughters and four sons, who are: Mrs. W. K. Rock of Grand Mound, Mrs. Jettie Stillwell of Davenport, Mrs. Jno. Marron of near Calamus and Mrs. Jno. Farrell and Mrs. Otto Durboron, both living in Chicago; Henry Giffers of Bliedorn, Fred of Berlin township and Gustave and Sylvester, both at home. He also leaves 21 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The decedent was an honest, upright citizen, a kind and loving husband and father who will be greatly missed by his family and by a countless number of friends and neighbors who extend to those bereft heartfelt sympathy.

The funeral was held this afternoon with services at the German Lutheran church, conducted by Rev. L. Eschbach. The bearers of the pall were six old-time friends. The floral offerings were beautiful and his granddaughters acted as flower girls. After the services the remains were conveyed to Evergreen cemetery, followed by a large concourse of friends, where interment was made, W. J. Kelly being in charge.
