James Sheppard, one of the oldest pioneers of this section, passed away at his home, 611 Seventh avenue, at 6 o'clock this morning, after a lingering illness brought on last October by an attack of la grippe.

Mr. Sheppard was born in Ireland on February 11, 1836, and came with his parents to this country in 1832. He first came to his home in Sterling, Ill., coming to Clinton in 1854. He was employed by the W. J. Young Lumber company as foreman until the mills closed in 1894, when he retired from active work.

Mr. Sheppard was a gentleman of true Christian spirit, and was revered by all who knew him.

Surviving the deceased are his wife, Mrs. Ellen F. Sheppard; six sons, James and John of Clinton, Charles of Los Animos, Colo., Thomas E. who is traveling in the west, J. L. Clarke of this city and P. V. Clarke of Chicago and a daughter, Mrs. J. A. Laughan of Cleveland, Ohio.

The funeral will be held at 9 o'clock Saturday morning, with solemn requiem high mass at St. Mary's church. Interment will be in St. Mary's cemetery.

The funeral of the late James Sheppard Sr. was held from his home, 611 Seventh avenue, this morning, with a requiem high mass at St. Mary's church. Monsignor McLaughlin officiated and a large number were present to pay the last tribute of respect. Burial was made in St. Mary's cemetery.

The following acted as pallbearers: J. E. Moran, J. E. O'Neal, James Claney, John Claney, William Creake, P. Lenon, J. Delaney and J. Monahan.
