The community was shocked this morning when it became generally known that James McCullough had died during the early morning, following an operation for peritonitis. Mr. McCullough was taken ill Tuesday while at Bloomington, Ia., and insisted on coming home. He was seriously ill when he arrived home and was taken to Mercy hospital last night. The trouble was too far advanced, however, to stop then and he passed away early this morning.

Mr. McCullough had spent the greater part of his life in Clinton and Lyons. He was born in Kittanning, Pa., Jan. 24, 1858. He moved to Lyons with his parents when he was seven years old. In 1891 he married Miss Belle Robeson, of Davenport.Mrs. McCullough and their son Armstrong survive Mr. McCullough. He also leaves two brothers and four sisters, A. D. McCullough of Clinton; Harry, of Helena, Mont.; Mrs. William Armstrong of Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Sinclair of St. Paul and Mrs. E. P. Savage of Tacoma, Wash.

Mr. McCullough was well and widely known, not only in Clinton, but also throughout the state. He and his brother engaged in the dry goods business for a time and later he was connected with the Edwards Manufacturing company, traveling for them. At the time of his death Mr. McCullough was vice-president and general manager of the Stauber Manufacturing company.

He was a thirty-second degree Mason and a member of the Elks. He was a member of the Wapsipinicon club and other public and semi-public organizations.

No funeral arrangements have been made as yet, pending word from out of town relatives.

Funeral services for James McCullough will be held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. from the residence, 631 Fifth avenue. Rev. F. H. Burrell will officiate. The Masonic services will be held at the ceremony with J. H. Ingwersen in charge. The pall bearers will be C. D. May, F. S. Roberts, Leo Stauber, H. S. Sanford, J. C. Mitchell and T. F. Kelly.
