14 February 1890 - Clarence Sun

At 8 o'clock last Friday occurred the death of Dr. C. H. Lothrop, an old resident of Lyons, and one of the most widely known physicians and surgeons aged 58 years, 5 months and 3 days. He was first assistant surgeon and surgeon of the First Iowa Cavelry, in which regiment he enlisted, and has filled several offices of responsibility in the medical department of the State. The remains were embalmed and will be buried this afternoon by the Grand Army of the Republic, it being his request that he should be laid away by the boys that wore the blue.

In connection with the obituary the News says: "The departure of the late Chas. H. Lothrop brings to mind his cavelery horse, yet alive and in good health for an animal 32 or 33 years old. During the war the doctor became possessed of him from some place in Texas, and the two had been companions ever since. The animal is a sorrel has always been hardy, and a valued equine. Once, onely was he shod, and then in front, and so clumsy were his feet that it was found necessary to remove them. Recently it was found that some of his teeth were ulcerated, so that it could not eat well. Dr. Meyers, of Clinton, happened into Dr. Lothrop's office, the subject came up and the horse was brought into the office where his invalid master could see him, when the troublesome teeth were extracted and doctored up. If that old horse could talk he might relate some interesting war stories, indeed, which even escaped the eye of his historian owner. At the encampment of East Iowa Veterans, held here two years ago, the animal was taken on parade, and showed that he had not forgotten the bugle call. He is now a living reminder to the faithful wife of his master--of the one who has answered the muster out from life's battles."
