M. J. Melvin, a well-known merchant at 814 South Fourth street for the last 14 years, died Sunday evening at his home, 529 Eighteenth avenue after a brief illness.

Mr. Melvin came to Clinton from Delaware City when a small boy. His wife preceded him in death 25 years ago. Left to survive him are his mother, a nephew, Lawrence Rimmer, a niece, Miss Helen Rimmer, and two grand nephews.

M. J. Melvin was a member of St. Edward's Council, Knights of Columbus, The Catholic Order of Foresters, and was president of the Holy Name society of St. Mary's parish.

The funeral will be held Wednesday morning with solemn high mass at St. Mary's church at 9 o'clock. Monsignor E. J. McLaughlin will preach the funeral sermon.

Solemn requiem high mass was said for M. J. Melvin at St. Mary's church Wednesday by Monsignor E. J. McLaughlin, assisted by the Rev. Father Coleman and Father O'Donnell, Clinton, and Father Cone of Davenport.

Burial was made at St. Mary's cemetery. The pallbearers were John Purcell, J. E. Murphy, John Logan, J. J. Logan, J. P. Calnan and Patrick Cavanagh.

Attending the funeral from out of the city were Mrs. John Durkin, Mrs. T. H. Kelly and daughter, Mrs. Pansy of Chicago and Mr. and Mrs. James Roan and son Arthur of St. Paul.
