Charlotte, Ia., May 19--W. F. Hanrahan the well known merchant, died at his home here at eight o'clock last night, after an illness of two weeks with pneumonia. Deceased was born at Ottawa, Canada, March 10, 1838, and has been in business in Charlotte since 1871.

The funeral will be held Monday morning with services at Assumption church at Charlotte, followed by burial in the Charlotte cemetery.

Charlotte - At his home in Charlotte Friday evening, May 18, occurred the death of Wm. F. Hanrahan at the age of 79 years, 2 months and 8 days, death coming after an illness of ten days with pneumonia.

Wm. F. Hanrahan was born in Napeon, Canada, March 10, 1838, and in 1862 came with his parents to Charlotte, settling on a farm. Some years later he in company with the late Christie McGinn, engaged in the live stock business. In 1871 he opened a general store in Charlotte, which he operated up to the time of his death. Mr. Hanrahan was a Democrat and an active worker for the party; was one of the most influential members in this vicinity. Being a staunch temperance man, he was instrumental in having a branch of the Roman Catholic Total Abstinence Society organized in 1871. He was a devout member of the Catholic church, St. Edward's council, Knights of Columbus, and Sheridan Court, Catholic Order of Foresters. He was a resident of Charlotte for 55 years, and witnessed its growth and development. He enjoyed the confidence and respect of a large circle of acquaintances. He will be greatly missed in both business and social circles. He was married to Miss Mary O'Toole, Sept. 30, 1872, who with five children survive him. They are Frank, Charles, Aloysius, Misses Laura and Ceclia, all of Charlotte, and Mrs. Frank Monahan of Cedar Rapids. He also leaves three grandchildren. The funeral was held last Monday at 9 o'clock at the Assumption church, the business houses being closed during that hour as a mark of respect. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Thomas O'Dowd, who celebrated solemn requiem high mass. assisted by Rev. D. J. Ryan of Petersville, Rev. Peters of Clinton and Rev. Cone of St. Ambrose college, Davenport. The pallbearers were J. R. Kane, Matt Heenan, John Farrell, J. M. Cranny, John Monahan and John Hynes.
