Joseph Willie Weaver, 45, Clinton, died at University hospital in Iowa City Monday of head injuries received in an automobile accident west of Mechanicsville shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday.
Weaver was fatally injured when his car went out of control on Hudachek's curve. Weaver was thrown onto the highway. His car rolled over several times and came to rest in the ditch on the north side of the highway.
The Clinton man was travelling alone in a late model car at the time of his death. Several drivers reported to police that Weaver had passed them at a high rate of speed shortly before the accident.
Weaver, who is Cedar county's fourth highway fatality this year, is believed by officers to be the first Negro to die in a Cedar county automobile accident.
Weaver was born April 15, 1911, in Georgia and had lived in Clinton for eight years. He is survived by his wife and four daughters.
