John Ludwig Mumm, 68, of Omaha, Nebraska, formerly of DeWitt, died Saturday morning, July 6, 2019, after a long battle of fighting infections due to his recent hip surgery in February.
John was born Aug. 21, 1950, in Clinton, to Albert and Charlotte Tracy Mumm, also of DeWitt. At the time of his birth, the family was living on a farm near McCausland. At the age of 4, the family gave up farming and moved to town, where John attended kindergarten at the Masonic Temple.
John was a graduate of Central DeWitt Community Schools in 1969. He also attended Wayne State University in Wayne, Nebraska, and later the University of Nebraska at Omaha. At the age of 19, John enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving on the destroyer, USS Bigalow. While serving in the U.S. Navy, John was injured while on duty, which resulted in John later becoming 100 percent service connected disabled. John was very proud of being a member of the U.S. Navy and being a veteran serving his country.
John married the love of his life, Theresa Simoni, on Sept. 11, 1970, at the age of 20. Their wedding took place at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Long Grove.
John and Theresa raised two daughters, Shannon and Angela. The family of four moved to Colorado. They enjoyed road trips to the mountains, and spending time together, having food fights on the back deck of their home.
Later in life, after their daughters were grown and out of high school, they moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where they became family teachers at Boys Town. They were most proud of the impact they had on 22 young men who passed through their home. Most of the boys are still very much close to them today.
John was most loved for his sense of humor and boisterous laugh and will be greatly missed. Mostly by his six grandchildren, and one great-grandson and their love of his “Papacakes.” He loved to travel, and he loved to visit family all over the country.
Surviving are his loving wife of 48 years, Theresa; daughters and sons-in-law, Shannon and Tony Dobias, and Angela and James Cunningham; grandchildren, Curtis, Axie, Mariah, Shayla, David and Sami; great-grandson, Bowdy; older brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and LaRaine Bush Mumm; sister and brother-in-law, Jeanette (Mumm) and Steve Nantz; loving in-laws, Tony and Judi Simoni, Ron and Kay Simoni, Mike and Michaeleen Beard, Jerry and Jean Purcell, Dan and Cathy Eberhart, and Carlos and Christy Simoni; and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
Preceding John in death were his grandparents; his parents, Albert and Charlotte Mumm; his mother and father-in-law, Tony and Edna Simoni; a brother-in-law, Ted Simoni; and nephews, Brian Mumm and Tony Simoni III.
Visitation of family and friends will take place at Holy Cross Catholic Church on Friday, July 12, from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by a Memorial Mass at 1 p.m. A gathering of family and friends will take place at Ralston American Legion in Ralston, Nebraska. He will be laid to rest at Omaha National Cemetery in Papillion, Nebraska.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor John’s memory with a gift are invited to make a donation to the Disabled Veterans Association in John’s name.
