On July 9, 2019 Clayton Schuetzle died at 94 years young. Cremation rites will be accorded and there will be no visitation. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 10-11 AM on Saturday, July 27th at the Pape Funeral Home. A memorial service will begin at 11:00 AM. Memorial contributions may be made to support macular degeneration research happening at the University of Iowa Institute for Vision Research. Contributions in Clayton’s memory can be made payable to the University of Iowa Center for Advancement; earmarked in his name for macular degeneration research; and mailed to: University of Iowa Center for Advancement, AMD Research Fund, P.O. He was born May 1, 1925 on a home farm three miles west of Mound City, South Dakota to Jake and Martha Ritter Schuetzle. He attended a rural school and then attended high school in Mound City and Herried, South Dakota.

After farming a few years he decided to leave and explore other avenues in life. He found his niche in life in Cedar Rapids, IA, with a major retail store. From Cedar Rapids he was transferred to Iowa City, IA; Davenport, IA; Bloomington, IL; and finally, Clinton, IA. While in Davenport, he met his wife Genevieve Timmer. They were married on June 25, 1955 and had three children: Patricia, Jeffrey and Susan. Clay retired as a store manager of Montgomery Ward after 31 years of service.

He was an avid outdoorsman. Clay enjoyed golfing; fishing; hunting; tennis; cross country skiing; and downhill skiing and sledding (on the hill in his back yard). He also had a small yard with a big garden, a big boat and several golf carts. Clay enjoyed working on many do it yourself projects for his home. Clay hosted the annual Schuetzle Sausage Festival for over 50 years. This event was a family reunion where traditional sausage was made by all who attended. The Sausage Festival was the highlight of every year for Clay.

Clay Schuetzle is survived by his three children, Patricia (Christopher) Burno of Colorado, Jeffrey (Dawn) Schuetzle of Clinton, Susan (Robert) Cagley of Colorado, seven grandchildren, and five great grandchildren, two brothers Tim Schuetzle of Iowa and Gary Schuetzle of Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve; his parents; his brothers Albert, Wes, Burnell, Harlo, and Hartson Schuetzle; and his sisters Gloria Hahne and Elsie Miller.

Gathering of Friends
