Elizabeth Crook, daughter of John and Anne Crook, was born February 13, 1828 at Stokenteinhead, Devonshire, England, and resided in her native land until 1855 when she sailed to America and was united in marriage at Quebec, Canada, October 14, 1855, with Robert A. Burgoyne, who had come to America two years previous. Mr. and Mrs. Burgoyne very soon located in Davenport, and resided there three years, later moving to a farm near Welton, where they resided until the summer of 1889, when they came to DeWitt, and here they were ever recognized as sterling citizens. Mr. Burgoyne preceded the faithful companion in death, he having passed away February 22, 1906. With the father, one son, John, and a daughter, Mrs. Emma Kindig, greeted the mother on the other shore, when after a week's illness, she was called March 3, 1917, to the Great Beyond.

Mrs. Burgoyne was a member of the Episcopal church of her native town and her life was that of a noble Christian.

She loved her home. She was ever a true and faithful mother, a constant and sympathizing friend, an ardent lover of nature and each day, she devoted a happy hour to the care and development of plant life.

Her life in the home was one of great activity, assisting and advising, until the evening of Sunday, February 25, when the strength seemed to have gone.

The children surviving are Walter of Rhodes, Iowa, Herbert of Maywood, Ill., Robert of Vienna, S. Dak., Elizabeth of DeWitt and Thomas of Maywood, Ill. There are also nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

"There is no Death; what seems so is Transition."

Friends paid their last tribute to the beloved resident when they assembled at the home Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock.

Rev. W. D. Witham had the service in charge. "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere", and "Jesus, Lover of My Soul", were sweetly sung by Mrs. W. S. Saltmarsh. The bearers of the casket were Messrs. T. W. Large, W. Lee, C. F. Kent, W. J. Thomas, J. V. Bloom and W. J. Cameron.
