page 4Elwood, Ia., Jan. 11--This community was shocked about noon Monday when the sad news came that Mrs. Saline Hill had passed away very suddenly at her home at Forest City. She had been in her usual health and had helped with the morning work, when she became suddenly ill and before the doctor could reach her she had passed away. Mrs. Hill was an old, respected citizen of this place until a few months ago, when she moved with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Busch, to Forest City. The remains were brought here Wednesday morning and taken to the home of her son, Will. The funeral services were held at 1:30 at the house. The obituary will appear later.

page 5Elwood, Ia., Jan. 15--Mrs. Robert Hill was born Celena Stone in England July 13, 1850, and died Jan. 8, 1917, at her home in Forest City, Ia. She was an only child and removed to this country with her parents when she was eight years old. They were eight weeks on the ocean making the trip and suffered shipwreck. When she was 12 her father was called into the civil war, not to return. She and her mother underwent the privations shared by many in the great struggle, viz: that of maintaining the home. They then lived at Mill Rock, Monmouth.
Nov. 22, 1867, she was united in marriage to Robert Hill, who was also an Englishman. They went to housekeeping southwest of Elwood. To them were born eight children as follows: W. S. Hill, Susie May and Clara, deceased; Chas. W. Hill, Mrs. Hattie Bloore, Forest D. Hill, Mabel, deceased, and Mrs. Grace Busch. The latter being the youngest she and her mother shared their homes. Mr. Hill's death occurred March 6, 1906. They were pioneers and saw the religious development of this part of Iowa. The trade center was then Clinton.
Not deterred by physical difficulties she was a noble helpmate to her husband and they earned the well wishes and esteem of a host of friends.
She saw the spiritual development of this part of the state and as a long time member of the Methodist church gave faithful and persistent effort to advance the Master's kingdom.
Home was also her kingdom and her children have a blessed heritage in the memory of a mother love broad and deep as their human need. Though not living the promised "three score years and ten" (for her life spanned only 66 years, 5 months and 25 days), yet they were filled with service, though the end came suddenly to leave these toil-worn scenes and enter the presence of the Lord and rest and meet the waiting ones. The writer of this memoir has an acquaintance of five years of neighborliness.
She was a model of industry, rich in reminiscence and sympathetic in nature. While individualistic she was true to her convictions in the light she saw them. We commend the broken family circle to the great compassionate Father.
Short funeral services were conducted at Forest City Tuesday afternoon by Rev. Cunningham, and the remains, accompanied by C. W. Hill and family, and F. W. Busch and wife, were brought back to the dear home scenes.
The body lay in state at the home of W. S. Hill and was viewed by a large concourse.
At 2:30 Wednesday services were held in Elwood Methodist church. Music was by Mesdames Christia Hicks and Agnes Myatt, with Blanche Langham, pianist. The pall bearers were nephews: Will Langham, R. E. and J. E. Cressey, Tom and Ralph Myatt and S. N. Hill.
Scripture, reading of obituary and heartfelt tribute by Rev. Cleveland out of five years acquaintance was followed by a sermon ably delivered by Rev. C. R. Disney. The flower bearers were: Mrs. E. D. Anderson, Mrs. McKenzie and Vesta Phillips. The casket was covered with floral pieces, gifts of church societies, relatives and friends.
Those present from out of town were: Mrs. Ruth Hill and Mrs. J. D. Blue, Jr., Cedar Rapids; Dale Shepard, Clinton; Mrs. Rev. Cleveland, Stanwood; A. L. Cook and wife, Mrs. Will Cundill, Mr. Lee, Miss Staack, D. Lockwood and wife, D. M. Hicks and wife, and Mrs. Rev. Kidder, Maquoketa; Mrs. Elizabeth Harrison and Emily R. Smith, Letha Myatt, Mrs. J. D. Busch and Ed of Lost Nation.
