10 January 1917 - The Clinton Advertiser page 2

Death summoned away another veteran of the civil war Tuesday noon, when William Hay, a former member of Nathaniel Baker post of Clinton, died at his home in Camanche after an illness of two days. Acute indigestion was given as the cause.

Mr. Hay has been a resident of this county and of Camanche 62 years, coming here from Germany in 1855. He was born February 28, 1850 at Oldenberg.

As a private in Company I of the Second regiment of Iowa Volunteer Infantry, the Clinton county pioneer served in the war of the Rebellion three years. He enlisted at Lyons May 5, 1861, and was honorably discharged May 27, 1864. He was a member of Nathaniel Baker post, Grand Army of the Republic in Clinton until 1894.

Coming back home after the war, he was united in marriage with Miss Fredericka Voss, who preceded him in death 22 years.

Since that time the veteran has made his home with his only daughter, Mrs. A. L. Arp in Camanche.

Funeral services will be held at the home Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Members of the Grand Army post of this city who live in Camanche, will have charge.
