Christian Meggars was born in Gellenstadt Holstein, Germany November 2, 1829. When a youth of 25 he came to America and landed in Quebec, Canada. From there he went to Chicago where he worked for a time on the railroad. From Chicago he came west and landed in Clinton county where he settled on a farm south of Charlotte. He made the tedious trip from Chicago to Clinton country with a team of oxen. On the 14th of June, 1861, he was married to Miss Caroline Schultz who preceded him in death 10 years ago. To this union were born 10 children, 5 sons and 5 daughters who are all living. They are: John and Albert of near Charlotte; Fritz and Hans of Malone; William of Welton, Mrs. Minnie Stahl of DeWitt, Mrs. Gruenwalt of Donahue, Scott county, Mrs. Caroline Schoolman of Goose Lake, Mrs. Matilda Christiansen of Welton, and Mrs. Mary Robinson at home. Besides the children he also leaves 51 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and one brother, Claus Meggars, of Buchanan county, to mourn his death.

Three years after his wife's death Mr. Meggars with his daughter Mrs. Mary Robinson, moved to Charlotte, where they lived up to the time of his death.

Mr. Meggars was an honest and upright citizen, loved and respected by all who knew him. He was taken sick last Monday with pneumonia which caused his death Friday morning at 8:10 o'clock. He reached the age of 86 years, ten months and thirteen days.

The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Lutheran church, a large concourse of between 80 and 90 automobiles followed the remains to their last resting place in the ?? cemetery.
