9 May 1957 - The Tipton Conservative

Charles Nicely, 39, Wheatland, was burned to death Sunday afternoon when he was trapped in the cab of his gasoline truck after it overturned on old highway 30 about a mile west of Wheatland.

Nicely, alone in the truck, apparently lost control of the vehicle when he attempted to pass a car driven by Silvan Klahn of Lowden. The truck nicked the Klahn car, then turned end over end, landing upright on the highway.

Nicely was pinned in the cab of the truck and passing motorists were prevented from getting to him by the gasoline that spilled from the truck and ignited during the crash.

The flaming fuel sent up billows of black smoke that were seen for more than 10 miles, attracting a large crowd of spectators. The Wheatland fire department put out the fire.

Nicely is survived by his wife, the former Mary Caes of near Toronto, and five children, Janet, a senior in Wheatland high school; Charles Jr., a junior in the high school, and Karen, Mary Ann and Mark.
