page 5James Large was born in Quincy, Mass. June 22, 1848. When 10 years of age his parents moved to Clinton county, Iowa. After arriving at years of maturity he remained on the farm with his father, assisting in its operation for some years. On the 20th of May, 1880, he was married to Miss Emma White who was born and raised in that county. To this union was born a daughter, now Mrs. Estelle Touney.
After his marriage he located on a farm near the old homestead. He farmed successfully for 14 years, then sold his farm and retired to live in DeWitt, Ia. He lived in DeWitt 15 years. Through the advise of physicians to better his health, he again sought the pursuit of active farming. He purchased a farm in Crawford county, where he resided for three years. Then owing to failing health again, he left the farm and moved to Perry, Iowa, where he lived six months. From Perry he moved to Sac City in Sept. 1913.
He was a sturdy, reliable, honorable man. He was always a great home body, thoroughly devoted to his home and family. Up to the very last his thoughts were of his heart-broken wife, his daughter, his son-in-law, and granddaughter. While a man of clean habits, honest in his dealing, upright and moral in his character, he had never made a public profession of religion until recently. A few weeks ago in the Bromley Tabernacle he went forward, accepted Christ as his Saviour from sin, and publicly acknowledged Him. He was very happy in this faith and died trusting in Jesus who took him to the mansion on high. He intended to unite with the Presbyterian church of Sac City but sickness and death prevented. We know, however, that he has joined the church triumphant in the glory world. He was taken sick last Wednesday and failed very rapidly with a complication of pneumonia. He passed away 45 minutes after midnight Monday at the age of 67 years, 9 months and 12 days. He leaves to mourn his sudden demise a devoted wife, a loving daughter, Mrs. Estelle Touney, a son-in-law Eugene Touney, a grand daughter, Hazel Carstensen and 3 brothers and sisters, Wm. H. Large, T. W. Large, DeWitt, Joe Large, Sutherland, Ore. Mary F. Homer of DeWitt, Ia. besides near and distant relatives and numerous friends.
